British Council donates Digital Hubs to two Public Schools in Lagos


The British Council in partnership with Microsoft has donated digital hubs to two public secondary schools in Lagos State: Oregun Senior High School and Ojota Senior Secondary School.

The commissioning of the hubs took place yesterday,31st, May 2013 in Oregun Senior High School, Oregun, Ikeja, Lagos.  Present at the event were officials of the Ministry of Education led by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Omolara Erogbogbo who ably represented the Honourable Commissioner for Education, the British Council’s Country Director, Mr. David Higgs, representatives of Microsoft, principals, teachers, invited guests and students.

Mr. Higgs in his address advised the students to take advantage of the hubs to explore the benefits inherent in ICT. He also reiterated the fact that for Nigeria to be truly the biggest and best economy in the continent, it must educate its youth and build their capacity in ICT.

The permanent Secretary in her address informed the gathering that Lagos State now has a total of three hubs, the existing one being the one at Surulere senior sec sch. Surulere. She used the opportunity to thank the British Council and Microsoft for their continuous supports in improving education in the State. 

She made it known that the State Government has provided about 110 schools with ICT laboratories with internet access, additional 100 schools have also been provided with e-tutors to ease the teaching and learning process. According to her, teachers have also been trained and retrained in ICT and government is not relenting at all as it hopes to do more. 

Mrs. Erogbogbo later commissioned the installed hubs and implored both the teachers and students to take advantage of the hubs to improve themselves, saying that the purposes of the hubs are: to encourage and foster collaboration, exchanged programmes, interaction between countries in sub-Sahara Africa and indeed the rest of the world.
