The year 2013 Spelling Bee Competition organised
by the Lagos State Ministry of Education in conjunction with DUFIL PRIMA, maker
of Indomie Noodles has ended with Adewunmi Usman of St. Paul African Church Primary
School, Odi-Olowo LCDA, Mushin emerging the overall winner in the junior
category. The first runner-up is Onyeabor Benjamin of A.U.D. Primary School,
Imota (Ikorodu) while Ndubuokwu Solomon of L. A Primary School, Ilogbo Elegba,
Otto-Aworo came third.
Winners in the Junior Category
In the senior category, Boadley Juwon Afolarin
of Omole Senior Grammar School, Ikeja thrashed other competitors to clinch the first
position. The second position went to Abolaji Abdul- Rahman of Community
Senior, Ipaja while Bio Marvellous came third.

The event which was held at the Adeyemi Bero
Memorial Hall, secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja on 14th and 15th
of May 2013 for the Junior and Senior categories respectively was witnessed by
students, teachers, parents, officials of the Ministry of Education and major
stakeholders in the Education sector.

For the junior category, the first, second and
third positions attract cash gifts of N150, 000, N100, 000 and N75, 000
respectively. In addition, wonderful gifts were also given to the winners.
In the senior category, N250, 000, N150, 000 and
N100, 000 were given to the first, second and third positions respectively. I can also tell you authoritatively that Boadley Juwon Afolarin is going to be the Governor of Lagos State for a day in addition to the cash gift and government sponsorship for an education exchange programme to Helsinki, Finland as well as government scholarship for tertiary Institution.
It would be recalled that the former first lady
of Lagos State and founder of New Era Foundation, Senator Oluremi Tinubu (OON)
introduced the competition in year 2000 which was later adopted by the Ministry
of Education, Lagos State.
Earlier on in her speech, the commissioner for Education, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye said that the competition is aimed at sharpening the skills
of pupils in primary, junior secondary and senior secondary school
categories in Lagos State. She lauded the former First Lady
of Lagos State, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, the founder of New Era Foundation for the initiative saying that the competition has
gone a long way to produce worthy ambassadors of Lagos state.
