Accessing Bursary Awards and Scholarships

The rising cost of accessing University Education is becoming worrisome to stakeholders in the sector most especially parents who obviously cannot afford the astronomically high cost.
There have been arguments and counter-arguments between Government on one side and parents, students and the lecturers on the other side and there seems to be no end in sight.

This problem has really posed a big challenge and based on my personal interactions with some parents, I found out that many of them are seeking alternative means of funding their children’s education at tertiary level. From the petty-traders to the low and medium income earners who often have the opportunities of accessing bank loans, all are not finding it cool at all. In fact, the rich ones are not also left out as they seem to bear the burden of the less privileged in the family or community.

The quest by parents to raise money to secure admission and fund their children’s education has forced some of them to engage in one or more of these businesses. Even Some undergraduates from humble background are not left out in this as they are seen on major highways, streets, markets etc trying to raise money to take care of their education.

Maybe you are having same problem, why don’t you consider one of these businesses to raise money, at least to support what your parents give. Who knows? You might from there become a business tycoon like Jimoh Ibrahim, Saheeto, Obalendesuya or Dayo Olomu, an Inspirational Speaker in London.

While we are asking Government to subsidize the cost of University Education so that a sizeable number or majority of the population may become educated, bearing in mind that education is a weapon to fight poverty, ignorance and disease and of course the best legacy that we can bequeath to our children. I will like to admonish you with the following tips meant to change our attitude:

  • Giving birth to a sizeable number of children we have financial power to cater for is a wise option. We must put into consideration the economic downturn in the world today.

  • The attitude of attending each and every social party you are invited to, and spending huge amount of money on the so called “Aso Ebi” almost on a weekly basis should be shunned. You must learn to attend only the important ones and, as regards the Aso Ebi, affordability should be your watchword. You must not put the interest of your children in jeopardy.

  • Shun or reduce activities/events that take much money off your pockets.

  • Take advantage of Bursary Awards: In Nigeria for instance, most State Governments give Bursary awards to their indigenes in various Institutions of Higher Learning. This is an opportunity to add to whatever you give to your children. If you are an indigene of Lagos, click here for information on how to apply for Lagos State Bursary Awards. Other Indigenes should seek detailed information from their State Governments.

  • Scholarship: Scholarships are given by Governments at various levels to students who have performed excellently well in their academic studies. For Lagos State indigenes who are exceptional in their academic studies, apply here.

For those who are seeking foreign scholarship, there are books written by experts on scholarship which afford buyers on ways and means of accessing scholarship. Although, the books are offered for sale, they are capable of opening doors of opportunities for you or your children. Some of the best selling scholarship books are listed below:
