The Honourable Commissioner for Education in Lagos State, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye made these remarks about the Spelling Bee Competition:

“I am happy to report that the goals of the competition have been achieved through documented evidences of our students’ performances in various external examinations and the fact that many of the past winners of the competition are now successful men and women in their chosen enviable careers such as Medicine, Engineering and Law.

“It is also important to stress that the overall winner in the Secondary Schools category has the singular honour of acting as the Governor of the State for one day.

“Suffice it to say that this peculiar experience has, over the years, continued to propel our students to greater heights as manifested in the keen competition that has been the hallmark of the competition.”

Mrs. Oladunjoye added, “I am pleased to note that there is a strong awareness about The Spelling Bee Competition among students/pupils at all levels in the state.

“This, in itself, is a reflection of the present administration’s commitment towards academic excellence among our children.

“It is this awareness that stimulated the state government to ensure the continuity of the laudable competition and this is done to assist students in developing their potentials be it mentally, intellectually and physically.”

Lagos Holds Screening Test Into Lagos State Model Colleges/ Upgraded Schools

The Screening Test, entrance examination into Lagos State Model and Upgraded Colleges was held across the State on Saturday 3rd, May 2014 with about 8, 000 candidates in attendance.

The Honourable Commissioner for Education in the State, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye monitored the examination by visiting some schools in the metropolis. Schools visited among others were Immaculate Heart Comprehensive School in Maryland, Community School in Alapere, Ketu, Eva Adelaja in Bariga etc.

Oladunjoye lauded the general conduct of the examination noting the peaceful and conducive atmosphere, orderliness of the candidates and the readiness of the supervisors to have a hitch free examination.

She disclosed that for the first time, candidate’s paper had their name and picture pasted to avoid impersonation and to encourage candidates become authorities in writing exams.

She said that one or two lapses observed such as lateness and omission of a candidate’s name in his paper are noted and shall be corrected in subsequent examination.

The Commissioner used the opportunity to urge parents who conducted themselves in an orderly manner, sitting at a distance from venue of the examination, waiting anxiously for their children, to always respond to their needs by providing educational materials such as books, uniform etc and feeding them adequately before they live for School in the morning.

“You should devote time for them by getting more involved in their studies, check their school work and ensure they do their assignments promptly.” She advised.

She further informed the parents that Government alone cannot do it, hence the need for all hands to be on deck to ensure a brighter, rewarding future for them.

The Screening Test is organised annually by The Lagos State Examinations Board to admit candidates from both Public and Private Schools into the Model and Upgraded Colleges in the State. If you need More Information about Model Colleges in Lagos State, please, click here.
